William's Story
"Growing up, we never talked about our feelings. For a long time, I didn't think I had very many! Working in the operating room for long hours, seeing patient after patient, I guess I sort of went numb. Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly I was angry all of the time. My patients were dying. I lost colleagues. I couldn't stay numb anymore. I started going back and forth between being really distant and being enraged. After a while, my partner said that if I didn't get help, we were getting a divorce.

STAIR helped me understand that I did, in fact, have emotions - like every other human on the planet. It also helped me understand how my emotions related to my beliefs about relationships. I truly believed that if I talked about the difficult things I witnessed each day, people would avoid me, and if I asked for help, I would be blamed for my problems. STAIR helped me see that these beliefs weren't facts. It opened up the possibility of being more emotionally connected to others, and played a major part in saving my marriage."
