What is a neurological disorder?
Neurological disorders are conditions that affect your central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. They can cause physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral symptoms like pain, confusion, memory loss, mood changes, or coordination difficulties.

There are many types of neurological disorders, including:

  • Neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease

  • Neuromuscular conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)  or muscular dystrophy

  • Brain conditions such as epilepsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury (TBI)

  • Spine conditions such as spina bifida or spinal cord injuries

If your loved one has been diagnosed with any of the conditions above, you are welcome in this group.

What to expect:
The support group is held every two weeks and
admits new members regularly. New participants are asked to commit to attending for at least 3 months (a total of 6 meetings) to encourage social cohesion within the group, and to provide the best chance for ongoing learning and skill development. After completing the 3-month commitment, members may continue to attend group for as long as needed. Please see the FAQ section below for additional details.

The group is designed to be a safe space to share knowledge and resources, and to seek emotional support. It is facilitated by a mental health professional who will encourage and guide discussion on topics such as:

  • What happens to the brain and body when a neurological disorder is present

  • The nature of caregiver burnout, and strategies that can help with coping

  • Clarifying roles in medical care teams and practicing effective care communication

Other FAQs:
Who can attend the group?

Adults age 18+ who reside in the state of NC and are actively caregiving for a loved one with a neurological disorder are welcome to attend the group.

Is this therapy?
Yes. This is a group therapy program.

How do I join meetings?

This group is held virtually via the HIPAA-compliant Simple Practice platform. You will receive a link via email and/or text 24-48 hours before each group appointment. At the time of sessions, you'll simply click the link to join.

Will it be the same people joining every time?
We ask new members to commit to at least 3 months to maintain group continuity and foster
connections. As new members are admitted on an ongoing basis, you may see both familiar faces and new ones over time.

How many people will be there?

As this is an open-enrollment group, the size of the membership may vary depending on the session. You can anticipate 4-10 other group members in attendance.

How much do meetings cost?
The cost of attendance depends on the level of commitment you choose.
Six Month Commitment: 12 sessions for $585
Three Month Commitment: 6 sessions for $315

You may choose to continue to attend group for longer than 3-6 months. After you have completed your initial commitment, you may choose to Pay by Session. The Pay By Session fee is $52.50 per session.

We are able to process payments electronically using a debit or credit card via Simple Practice secure software.

When is payment due?
For your initial 3-6 month commitment, payment in full is due 24 hours prior to the start of the program. Please consult with Dr. Mullane if a payment plan is needed.

Once your initial commitment is fulfilled, you may opt to continue group, and to Pay By Session. If you opt in to Pay By Session, you will be charged by midnight on the date of your appointment.

Can I use insurance for this?

You may be able to use insurance. There are a few steps involved if you plan to pursue this option. Ginkgo Leaf Health Services is a direct pay practice, meaning that there is no guarantee that your insurance will reimburse for sessions. However, you will receive a Superbill at the end of each month which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What happens if I miss a session?

You will not be reimbursed for missed sessions.
